Leveson heckler’s spiritual support from Desmond Tutu

diary LONDON, ENGLAND - MAY 28: A protester, named as David Lawley-Wakelin, who disrupted former Prime Minister Tony Blair's testimony at the Leveson Inquiry, by bursting into the courtroom, is led away from the Royal Courts of Justice by police officers and security staff on May 28, 2012 in London, England. This phase of the Leveson Inquiry into the culture, practice and ethics of the press in the United Kingdom is looking at the relationship between the press and politicians. The inquiry, which may take a year or more to complete, comes in the wake of the phone hacking scandal that saw the closure of The News of The World newspaper in 2011.

David Lawley-Wakelin, who interrupted the Leveson Inquiry in May to accuse Tony Blair of being a war criminal, goes on trial today. The case, at Haringey Magistrates Court, sees him charged with causing Blair “harassment, alarm or distress”.

He has one notable supporter — Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who has already called on Blair to face war crimes charges at The Hague.

Lawley-Wakelin got in touch with Tutu through iwannameet.com and Tutu replied.

In an email seen by the Londoner, Tutu told him: “The world needs more people like you. I hope the court finds in your favour that people should not abuse their freedom nor their authority. We have agitated for this and similar causes. I say to younger folk that they should reach for the stars, be idealistic and take on the baton which some of us might pass on to them. I give you mine in this instance. Go for it. God bless you. Desmond Tutu”.

Will the blessing of the Archbishop be enough? We shall see.
