Homage to an avant-garde hero at Serpentine Gallery

The godfather of avant-garde cinema, Jonas Mekas, was the star of his own exhibition launch last night at the Serpentine Gallery.

The 90-year-old film-maker and artist celebrated the opening of his first major UK retrospective, with guests including textiles designer Allegra Hicks, restaurateur Marlon Abela and his wife Nadya, and the Serpentine’s co-director Julia Peyton-Jones.

Mekas, who worked with Andy Warhol and inspired Martin Scorsese, has been described as a “true hero of the underground” — but after nearly a century Mekas has more than earned his place among the Establishment.
