'He put me on a diet and took me to Paris': Norman Parkinson remembered

The late fashion photographer Norman Parkinson was remembered last night at the launch of Century of Style, a retrospective of his work at the National Theatre.

The collection includes images of Elizabeth Taylor, Jerry Hall, Audrey Hepburn and Celia Hammond, who had only kind words for the man who kick-started her modelling career.

“He just made you look at your very best, always,” she recalled. “He discovered me, put me on a diet and took me to Paris. I loved the man.”

Hammond, who now works in animal conservation, did not envy today’s cover girls. “I’m glad my career was in the Sixties and not now,” she said. “We had to provide our own shoes and jewellery and do our own hair and make-up. We worked harder in that respect than they do now. The only thing is that they earn lots of money these days, which I never did.”
