Photographer Greg Bartley, who took a portrait of Mandela in 1990: “I still remember the handshake. It was firm and rough but sincere, warm and heartfelt. I just got a phone call one morning and was asked what I was doing that night — I said ‘I’m washing my hair’ and they asked if I was available to photograph Nelson Mandela. I said I could wash my hair another night.”
