Freddie statue will rock on — but where?

13 March 2014

The final resting place of the late Freddie Mercury has been a mystery since his death in 1991. But where they will put London’s iconic statue of the singer is a new conundrum.

We Will Rock You, the show based on the music of Queen, written by Ben Elton and produced by actor Robert De Niro, ends its run at the Dominion Theatre in Tottenham Court Road in May after 12 years on stage. The giant golden statue of Mercury in performance mode outside has become a landmark in the area but will have to be removed before Motown: the Musical opens at the theatre later this year.

Online magazine Londonist has proposed a series of options. Our favourite idea is that it should head to Trafalgar Square to be placed on the fourth plinth. Otherwise, how about giving it to Fulham FC as a replacement for Mohamed Fayed’s much maligned Michael Jackson tribute, which was pulled down last year?

The Londoner has learnt that there are, as yet, no plans for a relocation.

“I understand Freddie will be brought down three weeks after the show closes,” said a press officer for We Will Rock You. “Where he will go is still to be determined.”
