With X Factor ratings slumping, is the nation ready for a more political talent competition? Rock the House, devised by MP Mike Weatherley, enlists MPs to nominate unsigned talent from their constituencies.

Counting Alice Cooper, Julian Lennon and Brian May as patrons, the 2013 competition launched in Westminster on Monday with Speaker John Bercow enthusing that it was “blowing the cobwebs away from the Commons.” Weatherley, an Iron Maiden aficionado, recalled last year’s surprise thrash metal nomination from the Prime Minister.

“I’m not sure if David heard them before he signed the forms,” he said. “The PM is a Thin Lizzy fan.”
