Rise in reports: recorded adult sexual offending has increased following the Jimmy Savile scandal

Christmas has come early for the executives at the BBC. Dame Janet Smith’s report into the institutional culture that let Jimmy Savile get away with his predatory sexual behaviour for decades will now not be published until after the holiday season.

The independent review, which was set up in October last year, has so far spoken to more than 720 people, including more than 340 telephone conversations with witnesses and holding around 140 witness interviews. According to the review’s official website, “witness interviews are continuing and, as a result, the Review will not be in a position to finalise its report before the end of January 2014”. Any damaging evidence the report has uncovered will now be a new year’s surprise.
