Following my story on Friday about John Humphrys being woken up by a leaf-blowing machine near Ravenscourt Park at 7am on Saturdays and Sundays, he was teased by his colleague Jim Naughtie on the Today programme this morning.

Nobody appreciates a lie-in more at weekends than Humphrys, who has to wake up at an ungodly hour during weekdays to present the Radio 4 show, and he has now successfully enlisted the help of Hammersmith council to replace the petrol-driven leaf blower with a man wielding a broom to clear up outside his house.

One listener suggested leaf blowers should have silencers like motorbikes but Humphrys insisted this morning they should be banned. The work is done much better by a broom, he said. If only we all had the same clout as Humphrys.
