Tottenham hope Brent Council will next week back their plan to use Wembley’s full 90,000 capacity for all home games next season.

Ahead of the meeting of the planning committee on March 23, council officers are expected to deliver their verdict by the middle of next week on the proposal submitted by Wembley National Stadium Limited.

Wembley want to increase the number of full-capacity events that could be held at the venue between August 1 this year and July 31, 2018 – which would give Spurs the option of playing every home fixture next term in front of a full house.

Tottenham have shown this term they can attract fans to Wembley. Champions League matches against Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen attracted near-capacity crowds, as did the Europa League tie against Gent last month – though this game was available at reduced prices and featured ticket promotions.

Though the council officers’ recommendation is not decisive, it gives a clear indication to the planning committee of their views. It will be one of the factors taken into account by the committee, along with the views of local residents and the potential benefits to the area.

Tottenham have still not confirmed officially where they will play home matches next term, although club staff are working on the basis that they will move to Wembley, ahead of the switch to their 61,000-seat stadium – a project costing about £800million – in 2018-19.

If the Wembley deal is done on schedule, Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Millwall will be the last cup tie in White Hart Lane’s 118-year history.
