A clothes warehouse in north London was gutted by flames on Friday night as 120 firefighters battled to contain an enormous blaze.

The warehouse was one of two badly damaged in the fire that broke out in Pretoria Road, Tottenham, at about 10pm.

Fire brigade investigators were on Saturday trying to establish what caused the blaze, which saw 30 people evacuated from their homes.

Firefighters spent more than four hours getting the inferno under control while shocked neighbours posted photos and videos on social media.

Jon Bain (‏@JonBainRKO) tweeted: “Huge fire in Tottenham right now – can see the smoke from my window.”

Station manager Bill Dunn said: “When they arrived, our crews faced a large, well developed fire and they worked incredibly hard in what were extremely challenging conditions to successfully prevent it from spreading to two neighbouring warehouses.

“At its height we had over 100 firefighters at the scene.

“Around 30 people had to be evacuated from homes in the nearby area during the initial stages of the fire as a precaution but they have since been allowed to return.”

Crews were on Saturday morning still at the scene of the blaze to damp down remaining pockets of heat.
