Veteran actor Tom Conti has revealed he wants to replace Boris Johnson as the next Mayor of London.

The Shirley Valentine star, who lives in Hampstead, said he will stand as a candidate for the Conservative party after first considering running for office in 2008.

Mr Conti, 72, told the Ham & High he would slash the cost of exercise and said Londoners might choose to vote for someone who is not a politician.

He said: “The motivation is out of rage. Lots of people enter politics because they are angry about the way things are – life is very difficult for people in London.”

The Scottish actor also criticised the Boris Bus, saying the transport project was a waste of money.

In the past he has blasted the government's benefit welfare reforms and the caps on families benefits.

Mr Conti, who has starred in The Dark Knight Rises, recently performed in Twelve Angry Men at the West End’s Garrick Theatre.
