With seven lakes, several sports pitches and two golf courses — all set across 1,200 acres — it is one of the biggest “gardens” in London.

But the lucky tenants of this cottage will be able to enjoy all the facilities of Wimbledon Common on their doorstep and will be just a few miles away from central London.

For more than 35 years Gravel Pit Cottage, which has two bedrooms and a large garden, has been home to a worker on the common, but following his death, owners Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators have decided to put it up for rent.

Wimbledon Common is home to about 100 species of birds, more than 20 types of mammal and 12 kinds of fish.

The unusual location of the property, which is down a track and close to the A3, and its low rent of £1,900 a month is expected to mean it is quickly snapped up.

Robert Holmes, of estate agent Robert Holmes and Co in Wimbledon Village, said: “The reason it’s a reasonable price is that it’s the hand that fits the glove. It’s quite isolated which is its strength and its weakness depending on what you like.”

He added: “It’s the biggest garden in London and you have full access to it. We’re expecting it to go quickly. We’re expecting a strong demand on a thin market.”
