The new world record for the fastest beer mile has been set in London.

The record was broken at the Beer Mile World Classic, which took place at Allianz Park in Hendon on Sunday.

In order to complete the race participants must swig a can or bottle beer of no less than 355ml and with a minimum of 5 percent alcohol, before running a lap.

They must run four laps on a track, adding up to a total of one mile - and those unable to keep their drink down face an extra penalty lap.

The record was set by Corey Bellemore, who finished the Elite Men's race in a time of 4.34.35 minutes.

Bellemore beat his own record, which he had set just three days before at a beer mile in Windsor, Canada, when he ran 4:39.56, shaving 8 seconds off the existing world record of 4:47.11, which was set last December.

The 21-year-old Canadian said: "You really have to have good chugs but you also have to have...consistently fast laps too.

"If you can chug like eight seconds per beer, then you'll be fine if you can run...fast laps too."

Most beer milers come from North America, but British competitors came in the top five in both the men's and women's elite races.

Dale Clutterbuck came second in the men's race, with a time of 4:47.39, while Polly Keen came third in the women's elite race, finishing in 6:52.71, just ahead of fellow Englishwoman Laura Riches, who came fourth in 7:13.82 minutes.

The women's race was won by Erin O'Mara from the USA in a time of 6:43.35.
