The Shard was lit up tonight in a stunning light display over the River Thames to mark the countdown to the New Year.

The 87-storey skyscraper has become home to Western Europe's highest art installation as the capital prepares to celebrate the beginning of 2015.

Londoners will be treated to a spectacular light display, which is located in the building's top 40 floors, every evening from now until December 31st.

Dubbed The Shard Lights, the installation was designed by artists at the Jason Bruges Studio, who hope it will "reflect and evoke the spirit, energy and dynamism of London".

Mr Bruges said: “Shard Lights will create a theatre in the sky, and it will be a prominent feature of the London skyline for the twelve days of the project.

“It has been an honour to work on this project for such an iconic and internationally recognised building.”

Irvine Sellar, developer and shareholder of The Shard, said: "We wanted to create an unprecedented installation that takes an architectural icon and turns it into a piece of public art as a gift that every Londoner can enjoy during the festive season.
