A shopkeeper today thanked the hero son of film stars Jeremy Irons and Sinead Cusack for tackling two thieves — and apologised for the broken wrist he suffered in the struggle.

Actor Max Irons, 28, leapt into action when he spotted the teenagers fleeing a corner shop near his parents’ £3.5 million home in Notting Hill.

But as he wrestled one suspect to the ground his wrist was shattered by a blow with a broomstick from one of the shop’s employees.

A member of staff at Embassy News Supermarket told the Standard: “We are really grateful he helped us catch the thief. It was brave of him.”

He insisted the injury happened by mistake, adding: “We didn’t think Max was a shoplifter. We know who he is as he and his parents are regular customers. He got hit on his wrist in error.

“We have already apologised to him and his parents for what happened.”

The shopkeeper, who asked not to be named, said: “Two men came in and each grabbed several bottles of wines then fled. Staff ran out after them.

“Max wasn’t in the shop at the time. He must have seen us chasing a shoplifter in the street. He helped us wrestle him to the ground then pin him down for several minutes till police arrived.”

Mr Irons has appeared in the fantasy film Red Riding Hood and the hit BBC series the White Queen and has also modelled for Burberry and Mango.

He revealed his deed in an interview to promote his new film Riot Club, about the antics of the Bullingdon Club, the Oxford University society attended by David Cameron, George Osborne and Boris Johnson.

He said he had decided to intervene “to impress his girlfriend”, adding: “I’ve never done anything heroic before. I did it once and broke my wrist.”
