'Rotten' borough honours Michael Caine

Sir Michael Caine is to be given the freedom of Southwark, three years after branding parts of his home borough "rotten".

The Rotherhithe-born actor, 79, and L-Cpl Johnson Beharry, from Dulwich, Britain’s highest-decorated soldier, will receive the honour in St George’s Cathedral, Elephant & Castle, in May.

In 2009, Sir Michael clashed with council bosses after saying the Heygate Estate “should never have been built”.
