Heartbroken girlfriend's tribute to 'childhood sweetheart' Waseem Akhtar killed in Romford superbike crash

Tribute: Waseem Akhtar

The girlfriend of a young man who died in a superbike crash has told of her heartbreak at losing her “true childhood sweetheart”.

Waseem Akhtar, 24, was on his new motorbike when he collided with a cyclist before crashing into the back of a parked van on the A12 in Romford.

Mr Akhtar suffered catastrophic injuries. He died at the scene at 2.40pm last Wednesday.

The cyclist, in his forties, is in a “stable” condition in hospital. Mr Akhtar, an off-licence worker and mechanic, lived with his family about four miles away in Manor Park.

His girlfriend Shanaye St George, 21, paid tribute to him as she laid flowers by the side of the dual carriageway.

She said: “He was my true childhood sweetheart. He was only 24, he had his whole life to live and I was going to be part of that.

"I’m absolutely heartbroken. None of us know how this could have happened, he was such a safe rider.”
