A police officer is in hospital with "serious head injuries" after a crash between a car and a motorbike in Southwark today.

Police confirmed the officer, who was off duty and not riding a police motorbike, was hit by a car in Great Dover Street at around 12.45pm.

A spokesman for the Met said: "We were called to reports of a collision between a car and a police motorcycle at around 12.45pm.

"The rider of the motorcycle is a male police officer, and he was taken to hospital for treatment. We are awaiting a condition check.

"The driver stopped at the scene and there were no arrests. No other injuries were reported," he added.

A spokeswoman for the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 12.45 to Great Dover Street to a road traffic collision involving a motorbike and a car.

"We treated a man at the scene for serious head injuries and he was taken as a priority by ground ambulance to the Royal London Hospital."

Transport for London said the A2, Great Dover Street, was closed in both directions at the junction with Law Street.
