Commuters faced severe rush hour delays on the Northern line this morning after a man was struck by a train at Kennington Tube station.

Emergency services rushed to the station, which was shut after the man was hit by a northbound train at about 6.30am.

The Northern line has been suspended between Morden and Moorgate and Waterloo and Kennington with severe delays on the rest of the line, TfL said.

Several stations along the route have been closed to prevent overcrowding.

London Ambulance Service said the man had been rushed to a major trauma centre.

Firefighters erected blue tarpaulin on the pavement outside the station to allow medics to treat the man at the scene before he was taken to hospital.

Tube passengers trying to head to work from Kennington station were turned away.

Commuter Guy Armitage, 34, who was told to find another route, said: "The station was shut with a motorcade of ambulances, fire trucks and police in attendance.

"Just outside the station they had erected a blue tarp under which medics were working, whoever was under it was then loaded into an ambulance.

"All commuters were sent away to take alternative routes."

Tom McArthur tweeted: "Kennington tube station appears closed: Quite a large emergency services presence."

Ian Osprey said: "Kennington tube station closed at the moment."

Tube passengers also reported being turned away from Oval and Tooting Bec stations and huge crowds outside Clapham South.

Scores of commuters queued outside Balham rail station and at nearby bus stops as they tried to find another route to work.
