Conservatives in north London thought naming a road after Margaret Thatcher would be a fitting tribute to the former prime minister after she died.

But residents in the Grantham-born politician's former Finchley constituency are yet to apply to name their road after her - a year on from her death.

Barnet Council has said it has not received a single application for a name change, despite a campaign backed by MP Mike Freer and council leader Richard Cornelius.

Councillor Cornelius told the Hendon and Finchley Press one of the borough’s new developments could be named after Mrs Thatcher instead.

He told the newspaper: “It will come. We will find somewhere, but it may have to be on one of the new developments. We are just waiting for an opportunity or a sensible suggestion. It may well be that a road would like to volunteer to be renamed Thatcher Way.

“There must be a road full of Tories. We are looking for one to come forward.”

Mr Freer, Finchley and Golders Green MP, has since launched the Margaret Thatcher Tribute Fund to provide gardens at a hospice.

Mrs Thatcher, who died in April last year, served as MP for Finchley from 1959 until 1992.
