The night Tube will only benefit richer Londoners, a new study has claimed.

The 24-hour underground service, which was postponed from its September 12 launch date, will be available on five of the existing 11 London Underground lines.

But travel app company MapWay said the night Tube will only benefit those who can afford an extra £100,000 on their mortgage.

A study found the average houses price in the boroughs the night Tube will service is £394,000, compared to £285,000 in the areas it will miss out.

The report states more than a quarter of London’s 8.2 million population – 2.1 million people – live in an area that will not be covered by the night Tube.

The service is expected to be rolled out on most of the Central, Northern and Piccadilly lines, as well as the full length of the Victoria and Jubilee lines.

It was due to come into action earlier this month but its launch date was postponed due to a long-running dispute between Tube bosses and trade unions over how to staff the new service.

Gareth Powell, London Underground's Director of Strategy and Service Development, said: "This new 24-hour service at weekends is backed by Londoners and businesses and will make life easier for everyone, particularly night-shift workers getting to and from work.

"It will link with London's extensive Night Bus, taxi and private hire networks, will support thousands of jobs and stimulate hundreds of millions of pounds in economic growth.

"When the initial Night Tube network is up and running, we’ll keep it under review and would hope to extend it in future – in particular, once the improvement programme on the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines is complete."
