New Cross hotel guests forced to flee rooms after washing machine sparks fire

Goddis Lodge: firefighters tackle the blaze in the budget hotel
Alexandra Rucki2 April 2014

Hotel guests were bundled out of their rooms last night after a fire broke out, leaving a utility room completely gutted.

Sixteen people escaped from budget hotel Goddis Lodge, in New Cross Road, New Cross, after the blaze tore through the building just after 11pm yesterday.

They were able to escape from the building before the London Fire Brigade arrived at the scene.

Two people were treated for smoke inhalation by ambulance crews.

The fire was under control by 12.15am.

Four fire engines, 21 firefighters and engines from New Cross, Deptford, Greenwich and Old Kent Road were called to the blaze.

The cause of the fire is believed to have been an electrical fault in a washing machine.

Twitter user Hladik wrote: "Fire at Goddis Lodge on New Cross Road. A lot of smoke. People being evacuated from neighbouring buildings."
