Torrential rain is expected across parts of London and the south-east tonight as thunderstorms sweep across the region.

Up to two inches of rain could hit parts of the south-east in just three hours, forecasters said.

Yellow "be aware" weather warnings of heavy rain have been issued by the Met Office across the region until 10pm tonight.

Forecasters said the heaviest showers were likely to fall during the afternoon and early evening when thousands of motorists are set to hit the roads to travel to their summer getaway destinations.

More than an inch of rain could fall in an hour, and in some spots more than two inches could fall in the space of two or three hours, the Met Office said.

Light winds will mean the showers are slow-moving, leading to prolonged, torrential thundery downpours.

Forecaster Emma Sharples said: “We’ve got a dry, bright Saturday on the way and again we’re looking at temperatures into the high 20s, 27-28 maximum.

“There will generally be more cloud around as we go into Sunday but will be probably stay dry throughout the day."
