Temperatures are set to soar across the capital this week as a thunderstorm warning and rainfall give way to clearer skies and sunny spells, the Met Office has said.

Londoners experienced a bank holiday washout over the weekend, with a yellow thunderstorm warning issued for southern parts of the capital and the South East on Monday afternoon.

The Met Office issued the warning between midday and 9pm on Monday, saying that heavy downpours could lead to flooding and travel disruption.

Areas such as Croydon and Orpington were included in the warning, as well as Brighton and Hove.

A separate thunderstorm warning was issued for parts of central and southern Scotland, Wales and parts of England on Monday between 1pm and 9pm.

But forecasters predict warmer days ahead for London with the mercury reaching 23C on Saturday and Sunday.

Sunny spells are expected by Wednesday with temperatures soaring beyond 20C as conditions get drier.

The Met’s Deputy Chief Meteorologist Mark Sidaway said: “While things remain unsettled with further showers or longer spells of rain for some, all areas should see some drier conditions and sunshine at some point and, in that sunshine, it should feel quite warm.”

East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire will see the warmest spells in the country on Monday with highs of 20C and 21C.

The North will have a cloudy start to the day with some brighter spells and heavy showers developing.

The South will start with sunny spells before heavy showers and thunderstorms move in through the afternoon.

Greg Dewhurst, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "Overall, it will be a mix of sunny spells and showers across the country.

"For people looking to get away, there will be some sunshine and warm spells. And if you manage to avoid showers, then it will be nice in the sun."

"Anywhere could catch some rain so people should be prepared for that.
