Ella Wills7 December 2017

Snow and sleet are forecast for London as an Arctic blast sweeps the UK bringing another cold snap.

Forecasters said flurries of snow could fall in London on Friday as temperatures plunge to 1C.

The Met Office has issued a severe yellow weather warning for snow and ice on Friday and Saturday across areas of the UK with up to 20cm expected in parts.

It covers much of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and parts of northern and western England.

A cold blast of Arctic air is expected to spread south across all the rest of England after it first hit the northern areas of the UK on Thursday.

A Met Office spokeswoman said there was "a slim chance of snow settling in London."

She said: "Through Friday morning Londoners may see some showers and some sleet."

On Thursday afternoon, a mixture of sleet and snow showers will work their way across the whole of Britain, with the potential for blizzard conditions in Scotland.

The wintry showers will become more widespread over the next 24 hours.

Between 15 and 20cm of snow is expected to settle in parts of northern and north-west Scotland.

It comes after Storm Caroline battered northern Scotland on Thursday.

Temperatures are forecast to be between 1 and 4C in the capital, while temperatures in the Highlands will stay between 0 and 1 degree.

Light flurries of snow fell in the capital and parts of the south-east last week.
