Londoners likend the combination of torrential rain and Donald Trump's shock win to the "apocalypse".

As heavy downpours hit the capital, scores of people made the link between the UK weather and the US presidential race on social media.

Tim Rose said: “Trump is the new President. Meanwhile, in UK, the skies are black and it’s pooning down with rain. Can’t help but feel it’s the apocalypse.”

Another user, tweeting as Pink Boogie, wrote: “I think this hideous rain we’re experiencing in the UK is the world crying #USElection2016”

While Krucial K1DD wrote: “Does this rain mean D. Trump won the election #uk #HilaryClintonForPresident.”

Around 15 mm of rain fell across the capital last night with the rain expected to continue into the afternoon.

The Met Office predicted that up to 30mm of rain could fall within 24 hours.

Forecasters said there was a small risk of flooding in the London area as fallen leaves may have blocked drains, but there were currently no flood reports.

Dozens of people were injured in Croydon and five people left trapped when their tram overturned in the torrential rain at 6am on Wednesday.

The tram came off the tracks in a tunnel near Sandilands tram station, the exact cause of the incident is not yet known.
