London commuters heading to work for the first time in 2018 were treated to a stunning sunrise over the capital.

The sky was lit up with rich pink, orange and yellow as the sun rose on the first working day after the festive season and millions of people returned to the office.

“First day back at work and am presented with this stunning sunrise,” one man wrote on Twitter while another said: “The sunrise in London is quite something today.”

Scores of people shared photos of the colourful sky over the capital’s skyline.

It comes as the UK braces for a wet and windy start to the New Year with the Met Office issuing two weather warnings for Britain.

Most of the southern half of England – although with the exception of London - has been warned of gusty winds and a possible danger to life in coastal areas on Wednesday.

A yellow alert for wind set to come into place at just after midnight on Tuesday.

Forecasters have warned of a small chance of transport delays, road closures and disruption to power and other services.

For the capital, Tuesday is set to be rainy until mid-afternoon with temperatures expected to peak at around 10C.

Wednesday is also set to see downpours in the early hours of the morning before becoming cloudy with bursts of sunshine.
