London was too expensive, says Bafta-nominated director James Griffith

A london film-maker has revealed he had to make his Bafta-nominated short in Poland because it was cheaper.

James Griffiths, 30, of Haringey, said he couldn’t have afforded to build a set in the capital— even though he had won £40,000 of funding in a competition.

The cheque, from a film contest run by Bombay Sapphire gin, gave him a far bigger budget than he had ever had before.

He used the money to create a dramatisation of an Eastern Bloc jail for his seven-minute drama, Room 8, featuring parallel universes and miniature people.

It is now in contention for best British short film at the EE British Academy Film Awards.

Griffiths, who studied editing at the National Film and Television School, said: “It’s fantastic.

“When I started to make this film, I could not imagine being nominated for a Bafta. It hasn’t properly sunk in yet.” Room 8 can be seen at imaginationseries.com.
