London to get new drinking fountain network in bid to tackle plastic waste

The scheme aims to reduce packaging waste and improve access to tap water

A planned new network of drinking fountains is to be rolled out across the capital as part of an initiative to reduce plastic use.

As part of a pilot scheme set to begin this summer, 20 new fountains will be installed in London in busy commuter and shopping areas.

Places like Oxford Street could see the installation of the new taps under the £750,000 scheme to cut plastic waste.

He also launched a bid to encourage businesses to make their tap water publicly available.

One million plastic bottles are bought worldwide every minute, according to official figures. And the annual consumption is expected to surpass half a trillion by 2021.

Businesses across London "with lots of food outlets" will take part in a bottle-refill initiative from February. The businesses that will take part in the initiative are still being finalised.
