London stations up for breakfast radio awards

Showdown: Nick Clegg accused Nigel Farage of siding with Vladimir Putin
2 April 2014

London stations will dominate the contest for breakfast show of the year at the 2014 Radio Academy Awards.

With the nominations announced today, Nick Ferrari at Breakfast on LBC; The Breakfast Show with Penny Smith and Paul Ross on BBC London; and Capital FM’s Breakfast Show with Dave Berry and Lisa Snowdon, are all in with a chance.

They will compete against national stations KISS and 5 Live. LBC, which went national on digital radio last month, has eight nominations, including two for Call Clegg, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg’s phone-in.

BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 4 and talkSPORT will fight to be named UK station of the year.

Musicians in the running include Blur’s Alex James at Classic FM, with two nominations for best entertainment programme and best music programme — a category that also includes Radio 2’s Jamie Cullum. Elbow’s Guy Garvey (BBC 6 Music) and Scroobius Pip (XFM) won their first ever nominations and compete to be best music radio broadcaster.

Radio 4’s Becky Milligan is in the running for national radio journalist of the year and best interview. Jane Garvey of Woman’s Hour’s is nominated for speech radio broadcaster of the year.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at Grosvenor House hotel on May 12, presented by Chris Evans.
