Labour MP David Lammy placed the “human cost” of London’s housing crisis at the forefront of his campaign to become Mayor as he hosted an awards ceremony for film-makers.

Ten short films about housing in the capital were premiered at the London Short Film Festival this week after being selected by a jury including director Michael Winterbottom.

The films, including a rare look inside a squat later shut by police, had been entered into the Fourwalls film competition set up by the MP for Tottenham.

He said: “Housing is one of those issues that can easily be redacted to numbers, to cost, to planning. I just had this powerful sense that film would be a good way to convey Londoner’s stories.”

The panel selected Lewis Knaggs, 22, as overall winner. His three-minute film features footage of council estates with voiceovers by spoken word artists Suli Breaks and Kojey Radical. Finalists also included Cody Dock, a film on The Line, a planned sculpture trail backed by the Standard that will run from the O2 to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
