Khan’s just here for the photocall: Ex-Met man attacks Mayor on knife crime

Former senior Scotland Yard police officer who helped Sadiq Khan write the policing section of his manifesto has hit out at the Mayor, saying: “He’s just here for the photocall.”

Ex-superintendent Leroy Logan is bidding to be a London Assembly member to change the way City Hall battles crime.

He hopes to be a Labour candidate, the same party as the Mayor, but said he is not afraid to criticise him.

Mr Logan told the Standard: “We’ve got knife crime going through the ceiling, that’s one of the reasons I’ve thrown my hat into the ring.

"I know so many lives could have been saved if they got their act together to work with young people and push back on individuals grooming them.”

He said of Mr Khan: “The time he spends on Trump he could be really looking at some of these issues in a really sustainable way.

“Sadiq is there for the photocall … We need politicians that are more than just there for the photocall.”

The 62-year-old retired in 2013 after 30 years of service, during which he helped set up the Black Police Association.

He became Mr Khan’s adviser on police and crime in the run-up to the 2016 mayoral election.

Mr Logan has previously criticised the Mayor for not adopting the community- driven ideas they had discussed, but now concedes Mr Khan is starting to turn things around.

Grandfather-of-three Mr Logan said he still felt the “sense of duty” he had in the Met, adding: “This is costing lives. I can’t just sit back and watch.”

Mr Logan is seeking selection to be the Labour candidate for the Havering and Redbridge seat.

A spokesman for Mr Khan said: “Sadiq is doing everything in his power to tackle crime and the root causes of crime in the face of huge Tory cuts … key measures of violent crime have reduced since last year.”
