A Jaguar smashed through the window of a shop after its elderly driver reportedly lost control at the wheel.

The grey car crashed into the front of Ram Security and Fire Solutions in Ewell High Street, Surrey, just before 10.30 on Monday morning.

Nobody was seriously harmed in the collision, although significant damage was caused to the building.

The window of the shop, which provides a key-cutting service as well as selling fire and burglar alarms, was smashed by the impact.

The driver - a man in his eighties - was taken to Epsom Hospital as a precaution, police confirmed.

Richard Wade, 38, from Barnes, heard the collision from his office in nearby 1 Stop Data Ltd.

He said the elderly driver, who looked to be "pushing 80 years old", had apparently suffered a blackout while behind the wheel.

He told the Standard: "We heard the commotion from our office so we came out to offer assistance. When we knew that everyone was safe, I then took a quick couple of pictures.

"There was a woman on the other side of the window - opposite I think. A very close call. She was very shaken up, understandably."

A Surrey Police spokesperson said: "Officers attended Cheam Road in Ewell at about 10.20am following reports that a vehicle had collided with the front of a shop.

"The driver, a man his 80s, reported no injuries but was taken to Epsom Hospital as a precaution.

"Significant damage was caused to the front of the shop.

"No other persons were harmed."
