Hundreds of homes and businesses in north London were left without water on Monday due to a faulty valve at a reservoir.

Frustrated residents in Barnet said there was no running water from 2pm and various pubs, restaurants and other establishments were forced to close.

Affinity Water said there was a “production issue” at Arkley reservoir in Borehamwood. The water supplier warned people not to use any electrical appliances which required a water supply.

Large areas around Barnet and Finchley were affected while an even wider area was expected to have suffered from low water pressure.

Residents took to Twitter to lament the lack of running water.

Alan Simpson said: "I picked the wrong night to nail a load of Nandos hot sauce, dying of thirst and there's no running water in the whole of Barnet."

Liat Hughes Joshi said: “Really properly no water now #barnet...an excuse to skip the washing up tonight at least. @AffinityWater hurry up and fix this.”

James Rose joked: “We've got no water in our part of Barnet. It's like the start of the apocalypse.”

Ravi Beeharry said: “Discussing the no water in #barnet issue wife my wife when my 5 year old daughter stops us and says "Are we going to die?"

Pure Gym in North Finchley was forced to close, as was the Elephant Inn pub on Ballards Lane.

Affinity Water said water was being transferred from neighbouring areas to restore supplies to affected customers while work was carried out at the reservoir.

The firm said: “Our technicians are continuing their work to bring in water from other areas to restore supplies to affected customers.

“We are sorry for the inconvenience caused and thank customers for their patience while this work continues.”
