Harrow Council is proposing to ban the ‘disgusting habit’ of spitting in public places.
The council is calling on the public to sign a petition which would allow the local authority to introduce a ban on gobbing-up through by-laws.
If given the green-light Harrow will be the third borough in London to ban spitting, with Enfield and Waltham Forest imposing bans last year.
Councillor Susan Hall, leader of the council, said: “My feeling is that people who continue to spit on the pavement are only going to stop this disgusting habit if we take action against them.
“I hope there will be widespread support for making it clear we find this behaviour unacceptable, and hitting the pockets of those who choose to do it may be the best way to get them to stop.”
A total of 713 people have signed the petition.
The council has to prove to the Department for Communities and Local Government there is enough community support for any order to go ahead.
Earlier this year Enfield Council threatened Winchmore FC players with fines for spitting after football matches.
Last year two men were each handed a £300 fine by Waltham Forest Council for spitting, using the same powers on laws against littering.
Those wanting to sign the petition can complete an online form, visit one of the borough libraries or fill in a paper copy at the Harrow civic centre.
The closing date for signatures is April 30.
