Elliott Livingstone, the face of our Great Ormond Street fundraising campaign, has improved so much since his heart transplant that he has left intensive care — and asked for an ice cream.

The two-year-old is sitting up and his skin has become a healthy pink colour thanks to his new heart.

The toddler was kept alive for more than a year by a mechanical heart. His parents Adrian and Candace said they are now “daring to dream” about taking their son home.

The family has spent the past year at Great Ormond Street Hospital and got the call that a donor heart was available after more than 400 days of waiting.

Elliott, who suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy, has come off ventilation following a seven-hour operation. His original heart has been donated.

Although still weak, he has taken his first steps and an echocardiogram found his heart function is very good. He is not talking properly yet but, using sign language, he has asked for an ice cream.

His parents said: “We dare to dream that after 14 months of living at GOSH, home is closer than it has ever been.”
