A BBC actress has claimed she was verbally attacked by a "sharia" Uber driver as she made her way home from the Evening Standard's Theatre Awards.

Frances Barber, who plays a barrister in BBC1 legal drama Silk, said she was making her way home from the glitzy ceremony at the Old Vic on Sunday night when she stormed out of the taxi after the driver told her she was "disgustingly dressed" and that "women should not be out at night".

In a series of tweets sent to her 28,000 followers, she said: "Just had a sharia Uber driver, first time in London. Shocked. Reported.

The aclaimed actress said she had remarked on the cold weather to the driver, who had responded by saying: "Well, if you weren't so disgustingly dressed."

Ms Barber, 58, said she then got of the minicab, slammed the door, and "yelled" at the driver.

How does Uber work and why is it so controversial?

The actress had attended the awards, which were also graced by stars including Nicole Kidman, Gemma Arterton and James McAvoy, wearing a black high-necked top and floor-length skirt.

She said the incident had left her feeling "a bit shocked", and that she had reported the matter to Uber.

Following the incident, an Uber spokesman said: "We were shocked about this unacceptable incident and immediately reached out to the rider to offer our full support.

"We will of course take appropriate action and would like to again extend our sincere apologies to the rider."
