Flying squad officer shoots himself in the leg by accident at police station in Putney

 
Scotland Yard hailed the conviction as 'momentous'

An armed police officer was today in hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the leg.

The male officer, a member of the Met’s Flying Squad, was holstering a police-issued firearm at a station in Putney, south London, when it went off.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the incident. The officer was alone in the armoury at the time.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “At 9am on Monday and officer was injured when a firearm in his possession was discharged inside a police building in Putney.

“No other people were present at the time. The was officer was taken to a south London hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

“Inquiries into the circumstances are under way and the Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed.”
