Firefighters who battled the Grenfell Tower inferno have urged Theresa May to allow its union to play a “central role” in a public inquiry into the disaster.
The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has sent a letter to the Prime Minster saying firefighters and the victims have “questions that need answering” and calling on the Government to provide clarification on the inquiry's scope.
At least 79 people are believed to have died when a huge blaze broke out at Grenfell Tower on Wednesday, June 14.
Numerous fire safety concerns have been raised and the Government’s response criticised, with the FBU calling for a “broad inquiry” into building regulations and planning policy.
Mrs May announced a judge-led public inquiry into the tragedy after visiting firefighters who had tackled the blaze.
FBU general secretary Matt Wrack said: “The victims of this terrible disaster and the firefighters who fought the fire have questions that need answering. We will work closely with the families and tenants to ensure that they aren’t kept on the margins of this process.
“The union has to play a central role as participants in the public inquiry, with adequate funding to support that.”
