Hundreds of guests and staff were tonight evacuated from an exclusive Mayfair hotel because of a fire.

Nearly 40 firefighters battled flames next to the Metropolitan hotel on Old Park Lane.

Pictures showed the London Fire Brigade tackling the fire on scaffolding beside the building, which also houses the popular Nobu restaurant.

The brigade tweeted earlier: "We've got 6 fire engines & 35 firefighters dealing with the fire at a hotel on Old Park Lane in #Mayfair."

Shortly after 6.30pm, the London Fire Brigade said the blaze was under control, with 300 people having been evacuated before firefighters arrived on scene.

Station Manager Clive Robinson who was at the scene, said: “The fire was affecting a working platform on the first floor level of scaffolding. A small amount of the external fascia was damaged by fire.

“Around 180 residents and 120 members of staff evacuated before the arrival of the Brigade, fortunately there were no injuries.

“Firefighters will remain at the scene carrying out salvage work inside the property on the ground and first floor.”

The Metropolitan is counted among the world's top hotels, and is known to have put up Bruce Willis, Rihanna and the Beckhams.

Restaurant Nobu, named after renowned Japanese chef Nobuyuki "Nobu" Matsuhisa, tweeted: "Apologies but due to a fire which thankfully was not serious, we will not be open this evening. @NobuBerkeleyStreet is open as normal.
