Fire at block of flats in Islington sparked by a PUSHCHAIR

Pushchair fire: The blaze broke out in Goswell Road

A blaze tore through a block of flats when a pushchair caught fire last night, the London Fire Brigade said.

Three people were treated for smoke inhalation after being rescued from the block, in Goswell Road, Finsbury, by crews in breathing apparatus.

The blaze broke out when a pushchair on a landing of a stairwell caught fire. The LFB said the exact cause of the fire is under investigation and said the building had been left "smoke logged" after the incident.

A spokesman said: "This fire started after a pushchair on the landing caught fire. It’s important to make sure halls and exits are kept clear of items like this as, not only can they pose a fire risk, they can prevent your escape route if there is a fire."

The five floor block was inundated with smoke after the fire early this morning. It was under control by 7am as 21 firefighters attended.

A brigade spokesman added: "Although the fire was relatively small it caused a lot of smoke logging in the building. Crews put the fire out, made contact with people in the flats and after ventilating the corridor led them to safety down an internal staircase."
