A mother has recalled the horror of finding her own 20-year-old son stabbed to death in a Brixton park.

Student Dwayne Simpson was stabbed in the heart as he tried to protect his friend in a “senseless killing” in south London’s Angell Town estate in February 2014.

The estate, and Dwayne's mother Lorraine Jones, were featured in last year's Evening Standard The Estate We're In investigation.

Lorraine - nicknamed the “chief angel of Angell Town” and called “mum” by the community – has spoken about the tragedy which happened just weeks before his 21st birthday.

In an article for the BBC she said: “I came home from work to find the shopping was not done. I said I was popping out to the shops. ‘OK Mum, that's fine,’ Dwayne said. They were the last words my son ever spoke to me.

“Forty-five minutes later, while I was unpacking the shopping, two young people knocked on the door - I knew them from Dwayne's boxing sessions. They said: ‘Mum, Mum, Dwayne's been stabbed.’

“I said: ‘Is it serious?’ They said: ‘Yes, Mum.’ I said: ‘Do I need my car?’ They said: ‘No, Mum. It's just over there.’ Pointing, frantically.

“I grabbed my mobile phone and ran across the park. I saw my son lying on the street with the paramedics around him.

“They had opened his chest right there in the street to try to stem the bleeding. Dwayne had been stabbed in the chest, and the knife had gone right through to the other side.”

Ms Jones said more than 500 people visited her son as he fought for his life in the hospital as she pieced together what had happened using CCTV.

Mr Simpson had been driving along Brixton Road when he saw Rio Julienne-Clarke, 21, with whom he had a long-running dispute, chasing a friend.

He stopped his car and tried to intervene but was knifed to death.

In December 2014 Julienne-Clarke was jailed for manslaughter over former Lambeth College student Mr Simpson’s death.

Since his death, mum Ms Jones started a boxing club in her son’s memory thanks to a £17,000 grant.

In the article published by the BBC, Ms Jones also referred to the “horrific” problems facing communities in Brixton

She said children as young as nine are groomed into delivering drugs, girls and boys are regularly sexually abused and raped and young people are forced to wear bulletproof vests.
