Deptford given boost in quest to be London's newest 'hipster central'

“Hipster central”: Deptford is getting new stores like clothing specialist Plain Bear

Deptford’s claim to be London’s newest “hipster central” destination has been given a boost by the unveiling of a line-up of new independent bars and shops.

They will occupy 14 arches underneath London’s oldest surviving railway structure, the restored Grade II-listed Carriage Ramp once used to lift train carriages up to the level of the platform.

The tenants of Deptford Market Yard include a new outpost of the Little Nan’s retro “cocktails in teapots” bar, the Lomond Coffee café, street food specialists Mama’s Jerk and Frankie Goes to Bollywood as well as The Cheese Bar, which sells British cheese sandwiches and craft beer.

There will also be homewares store Win + Ruby, hand-printed clothing start-up Plain Bear, African-inspired fashion designer Gita’s Portal and “illustrated clothing” entrepreneur Jessica Childs, founder of Childsdraw.

Many of the new businesses have previously run street food trucks, pop-up shops and market stalls in the area. They will begin to open towards the end of this month, with all expected to be up and running by early October.

Jessica Childs of Childsdraw said: “As a local person I’m psyched to see a fresh new space for Deptford residents and visitors.”
