A cyclist who was attempting to ride to London using the M1 was escorted off the motorway by police.

The man arrived at Luton Airport this morning and was planning to cycle his way into the capital.

But police spotted him at junction nine after being alerted by several motorists and told him to find an alternative route to the city.

Police said the man arrived in the UK from Bulgaria.

A spokeswoman said: "It was a man who got off a plane at London and when he arrived he wanted to get to London.

"He was a Bulgarian man and not aware what the different road signs meant. We safely got him off the motorway at the nearest slip road. He was given safety advice and told to avoid the blue signs."

Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire Road Policing Unite tweeted an image of the man and wrote: “Cyclist escorted off #M1 J9, required to find an alternative route to London from arriving at Luton Airport #cyclist.”
