Climate protests: Activists gather outside Lloyd’s of London ahead of COP26

Protesters gathered outside Lloyd’s of London on Friday morning to demand the global financial system stops putting money into the use of fossil fuels.

Around 60 activists amassed outside the insurance firm’s headquarters to lay flowers at the Climate Justice Memorial outside.

Activists chanted “Ensure our future, not pollution” as they made their way towards Macquarie Capital.

The Day of Action is expected to be addressed by teenage activist Greta Thunberg outside Standard Chartered on Friday afternoon.

Protester Brianna Fruean said: “We’re here today to call on Lloyd’s to protect Pacific islands, for example, where the coal mine Adani is, to stop funding it.”

Pictures showed one activist waving an Extinction Rebellion flag, but the protesters appear to come from a range of groups.

As the activists made their way through London’s streets, they were escorted by City of London Police officers.

A band played Power To The People as the march made its way from Lime Street to Ropemaker Street.

Five women dressed as banshees and holding cymbals were outside Macquarie Capital, wailing and lying on the ground clutching white roses.

It comes just a day after Lloyd’s pledged to cut carbon emissions and push members of the commercial insurance market to do the same.

The firm has been criticised by activists for leaving decisions on whether to underwrite activities in a range of heavy-emitting sectors to its 100-odd syndicate members.

On Thursday, Lloyd’s pledged to move all of its operational and attributable greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050 at the latest.

Thousands of people are expected to take part in climate protests in 26 countries on Friday ahead of the beginning of the COP26 summit in Glasgow this weekend.

Insulate Britain began another protest on Friday morning, with demonstrators switching their tactics by walking into oncoming traffic on the M25.

Demonstrators briefly entered the carriageway near Junction 28 and 29 of the motorway, intending to walk down the white lines marking traffic lanes.

But Essex Police said officers arrived at the scene “swiftly” and 10 activists were removed from the road and arrested. Both carriageways were reopened within 30 minutes.

It marks the group’s 17th day of action - and comes just two days after activists had inked thrown in their faces by angry motorists.
