A bus has crashed into a glass shelter outside a busy shopping centre in south-east London.

The bus is believed to have ploughed into a glass canopy at the entrance of Intu Bromley just before 3pm this afternoon.

Dramatic images showed the bus pressed up against the shelter while London fire crews used a ladder to rescue a passenger from the top deck of the bus.

Simon Ashman, who works as a fishmonger at B & J Fisheries in the road, described how fire crews worked to lift injured passengers to safety through the front window of the bus.

He told the Standard: “The bus has hit the canopy.

“I heard the police and fire engines turn up and went out to see them using a ladder to lift injured people out of the front window.”

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: "Crews used an aerial ladder platform to assist a passenger down from the top deck of the bus after they were trapped there by their injuries.

"The woman was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service."
