Armed police have arrested a man outside Parliament after he reportedly verbally abused officers.

The man was held on suspicion of a public order offence and detained under the Mental Health Act shortly after midday on Thursday.

An officer’s taser was drawn as the incident unfolded but it was not used, the Met said.

Pictures from the scene show the man being held by officers outside the Palace of Westminster.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Shortly after midday on Thursday, a man was arrested close to Black Rods Garden after he verbally abused officers.

“The man was arrested for a public order offence and has been detained under the Mental Health Act. Enquires continue.”
