A north London bridge is to be transformed with a huge fence after a decade-long fight by suicide prevention campaigners.

Haringey Council gave the green light to plans to 3.1m high steel fence will be erected on the inside of the Archway Bridge, to prevent people from taking their own lives.

The bridge in Highgate, which is also known as the Hornsey Lane Bridge, lies on the boundary of Haringey and Islington meaning the plans put forward by Transport for London (TfL) had to be approved by both Islington and Haringey councils.

Islington Council gave the go-ahead earlier this month, and with Haringey's added approval, work can now begin to install the fence, which will aim to cut the number of suicide bids at the notorious bridge.

The Hornsey Lane Bridge Anti-Suicide Campaign has been lobbying for increased safety measures since 2005, when the original plans were put on hold.

However, conservation groups, including the Victorian Society and Highgate Conservation Area Advisory Committee, have expressed concerns that the fence could damage the appearance of the Grade II-listed bridge.
