Thirty people evacuated from a building in Aldgate on Tuesday morning after smoke and steam was seen pouring from the roof.

The London Fire Brigade said about 60 firefighters were called to a mixed-use commercial and residential building on Commercial Road in Aldgate at 8.31am.

Firefighters found steam and smoke travelling through the building’s extraction system from the basement to the roof.

Crews isolated the supply to a boiler in the basement.

The incident was over by 10.38am.

Footage posted on social media showed large plumes of smoke emanating from the top floor of the building.

It comes just a week after firefighters battled a major blaze in a high rise property in nearby Whitechapel High Street.

It took 125 firefighters to get the fire under control and 60 people were evacuated from the building, after initial calls were made to emergency services at 3.53pm.

Dramatic footage on social media captured the fire and an eyewitness said debris fell from the building, which is opposite Aldgate East Tube station.
