A memorial service today for the broadcaster Sir David Frost boasted a guest list every bit as glittering as the regular turnout at his famous summer parties.

Star names including Pippa Middleton, Sienna Miller and Jemima Khan joined royals led by Prince Charles and Camilla at the celebration of his life attended by 2,000 people at Westminster Abbey.

Prince Andrew was joined by his former wife, Sarah Ferguson, and daughter Beatrice for the ceremony which comes seven months after Sir David died after suffering a heart attack on board a cruise liner. He was 74.

Others in attendance testified to both the popularity of the broadcaster and the longevity of a career which spanned more than half a century. They included Ann Widdecombe, Cherie Blair, who was escorted by son Euan, Andrew Marr and Sir Terry Wogan.

Prayers were led by Ronnie Corbett and Joanna Lumley read a comic tribute co-written with Sir Richard Stilgoe which began: “Shall I compare thee to [rival] Sir Robin Day? Thou were more lovely and more temperate.”

Prince Charles was joined by Sir David’s widow, Lady Carina Fitzalan-Howard, in laying flowers at a memorial stone dedicated to the television star near Poets’ Corner.

The Very Rev Dr John Hall, the Dean of Westminster, said he “was amongst our greatest communicators”.
